About the Department

There are five academic staff members within the department offering undergraduate and postgraduate training in Biochemistry study. This section provides information on courses offered, research focus of each staff member and information on how to apply to the university to further studies in biochemistry.

Current and prospective students are encouraged and welcomed to contact any staff member within the department for further enquiries related to their discipline or field of research interest.

Purpose of Biochemistry

Biochemistry is the application of chemistry to the study of biological processes at the cellular and molecular level. It emerged as a diverse discipline around the beginning of the 20th century when scientists combined chemistry, physiology and biology to investigate the chemistry of living systems. Biochemistry is offered as major course towards offering both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. It provides explanations for the causes of many diseases in humans, animals and plants. Biochemists pursue to understand how molecules such as proteins, fats, carbohydrates, hormones, nucleic acids, enzymes, phytochemicals and vitamins function and regulated in any biological system. Knowledge gained in studying biochemical molecules provides students with independent research skill which is translated into further industrial research.
