Orientation leadership training is aimed at current students who are interested in playing a leadership role during Orientation.
The programme is designed to equip students with skills in leadership, teamwork, problem-identification, and problem-solving around the process of Orientation. A variety of issues are covered including:
- The spirit of Orientation
- UCT’s diverse social community
- Adjustment to university life
- Basic mentoring skills
- Career development
The aim of the training is to become a professional Orientation leader (OL) with excellent communication skills.
Competition to become an orientation leader is quite stiff as only the best trainees are selected. The criteria for selection include attendance and participation in all the training sessions, enthusiasm, responsibility, initiative and a good academic record at the end of the year. There will also be opportunities for orientation leaders from one faculty to work with OLs from other faculties during Parents’ Orientation, Schools Open Day, and in the Student Orientation and Advocacy Service (SOAS).
