What does the degree entail?

The BCom Economics is a three-year (full-time) degree course, during which time students are introduced to various economic principles. The core modules for specialisation in Economics are Economics and Statistics. In the first year of study, students become thoroughly acquainted with the South African economy and its challenges. Students are also introduced to economic theory and
concepts, as well as the basic tools of micro- and macro-economics. In the second year of study, the focus is on advanced economic theory and instruments. In the third year of study, modern economic policy-making and analysis are emphasised, while particular attention is given to public policy, international trade, economic analysis and the history of economic thought.

What can be achieved with the degree?

Graduates are employed as analysts, consultants, researchers, traders or academics in both the private and public sectors. The government, central bank, private and commercial banks, leading stockbrokers and consultancies, both locally and internationally, also employ Economics graduates. Students are strongly advised to proceed with studies at the postgraduate level.

What does the degree entail?

The BCom Econometrics is a three-year (full-time) degree course, during which time students are introduced to various economic principles. The core modules for specialisation in Econometrics are Economics, Statistics or Mathematical Statistics and Mathematics. Econometrics is the measurement and quantitative analysis of actual economic and business phenomena. For the professional, econometrics is a fascinating set of techniques that allows the measurement and analysis of economic phenomena and the forecast of future economic trends. It attempts to quantify economic theory and the real world of human activity. The discipline is relevant to public policy, including health, education, transportation, housing and environmental protection. The techniques and results can also be applied to other disciplines, including social sciences, such as history, political science, sociology and psychology.
